The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has released its annual assessment, the “European Union summary report on surveillance for the presence of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) in 2024.” Surveillance Overview Significant testing efforts continued across the EU this year: Cattle: >980,000 tested Sheep: ~277,000 tested Goats: ~94,000 tested Cervids: 1,761 tested Key Findings BSE: No cases of classical BSE were detected. However, 3 cases of atypical BSE were identified in France, Ireland, and Poland. Scrapie: Cases remain concentrated in a few EU countries. Sheep: 380 classical / 78 atypical Goats: 65 classical / 6 atypical CWD: No cases of Chronic Wasting Disease were detected during monitoring in deer.
